Eat Smart.
Waste Less.
What is the problem?
There is no clear solution to solve food waste in a household. Every year thousands of dollars are wasted in food due to people buying more than they need or because they struggle with food management. This contributes to the global food waste produced in the United States adding up to 218 billion dollars a year.
Goal
To design a set of food storage containers that are easy to use, simplistic in nature, and promote food management preventing users from producing large amounts of waste.
Actionable Insights
After significant research, I was able to highlight several parts of the users experience with existing products that were key points in my designing process.
“My current containers are practical, but they aren’t great quality. I would like my containers to feel durable and equally as aesthetically pleasing.”
-Kevin S, 51
“None of the containers that I own are really part of a set. this can make it hard to find a lid that matches the base.”
-Megan K, 21
“I tend to forget what food I have left, and by the time I remember, my food has already gone bad.”
-Cami H, 22
How Often is Food Being Wasted?
I conducted a survey to get data from target users including young professionals and family households ranging in ages 20-54, both male and female.
66.7%
66.7% of people waste food because they forget what food they have left or because they have a hard time keeping track of when their food goes bad.
41.7%
41.7% of people own random containers not part of a set and have difficulty finding their matching parts.
Design Inspiration
My vision is create something neutral using muted colors and earth tones combined with simple forms both organic and geometric to give off a dreamy aesthetic promoting health, wellness, and sustainability.
Concept Generation + Ideation
I began my exploration with mind mapping to explore different product opportunities. Next, I began sketching those different product opportunities to solve food waste in a household where I then explored all the benefits each had to offer. After this further exploration I decided to pursue the product idea that was the most solution oriented while still having the opportunity to further develop.
Prototyping + User Testing
I began prototyping by using polystyrene sheets and cabinet hinges. I was able to have different users test out each model where I gained insight on what was the most practical design and got specific input on what they liked and did not like.
